The World Health Organization estimates that by the end of the decade noncommunicable diseases will be as prevalent as communicable diseases in Africa. Professor Bongani Mayosi, President of the Pan-African Society of Cardiology, paints a picture of the novel activities cardiologists in this region are undertaking in their united effort to battle cardiovascular disease.

Heart failure is a common and serious problem in Africa due to rheumatic heart disease, cardiomyopathy and poorly managed hypertension. In the past decade, several of us have reported substantially on this topic. However, it is time to come up with a formal way of addressing this syndrome by targeted interventional studies.

The Pan-African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) and the African Union Commission (AU) hosted a two-day workshop on 21 and 22 February 2015 at the Desalegn Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The purpose of the workshop was to assemble experts from across Africa and the world to chart the path for ‘A Roadmap towards the Eradication of Rheumatic Heart Disease in Africa’

PASCAR is an organisation (established in 1981) of physicians from across Africa involved in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. PASCAR’s Governing Council consists of a core group of committed individuals with extraordinary knowledge of the African cardiovascular environment and the passion to make a difference.

An historic assembly took place in Zambezi Sun, Livingstone Zambia bringing together Africa’s leading experts in rheumatic heart disease (RHD) to design a roadmap for the control and elimination of the disease in Africa.

The Pan African Pulmonary hypertension Cohort (PAPUCO) platform was launched in May 2011, at the PASCAR meeting held in Kampala, Uganda.
